Mission, Vision & Values

Our mission:

The South Scioto Academy serves students by providing an enriching, challenging and responsive educational environment. Students will become confident critical thinkers through self-paced and individualized instruction that encourages a mastery of concepts, critical-thinking and the application of knowledge. All members of the school community accept that learning is the celebration of knowledge that occurs not just from teacher to student, but from student to teacher and beyond.

Core values:

Critical Thinking
Students will be encouraged to become critical thinkers. Understanding how thoughts, feelings and emotions interact and produce actions is critical to young adults. Students will be instructed in developing logical thought processes that assist in understanding and responding to a situation, task or challenge.

Respecting and Embracing Diversity
The concept of a global village no longer rests in theories or far-away places. The nature of twenty-first century life means that each of us is diverse in some way – learning about what makes each person unique and respecting this diversity is vital to student success. Teaching tolerance, understanding and acceptance are specific means by which we aim to create a warm and open community of learners.

Student Interest-Based Learning
If students are to become responsible owners of their actions and lives, they must first be made to be stakeholders of their education. Traditional educational systems keep this power in the hands of educators; our system returns this power to students. Once students realize learning opportunities are everywhere and their perspective is important, they will become active and engaged members of a learning community. Consistent and visible respect for a student’s perspective and interests is vital to ensuring a student’s success.

Pride in a Job Well Done
Too often success and achievement are overlooked by detracting factors. It is vital to celebrate even the smallest student success at any point possible. From this celebration comes a student’s self-realization that achievement is possible. A student’s experience of success and accomplishment will be a significant building block for future success.
